This workshop was the most valuable experience I have organised for my class this year. Not only did it make links to and across the science, geography and history KS2 curriculum, it helped the children understand the notable importance of our local area. It also gave the children the opportunity to understand the geological and historical significance of the rocks they frequently encounter at the beach. The children thoroughly enjoyed handling the rocks and now have a class of budding geologists: they were inspired by Rich’s enthusiasm and anecdotes about his work as a geologist. Not only an enjoyable and fun workshop but hugely supportive to our learning in school.
The initial phase of the Bedrock Project is now complete and we are delighted to be able to offer our geology sessions to all Torbay schools who took part in the initial project at a reduced rate.
The Bedrock Project is an initiative in which we are offering geology workshops and resources to Torbay primary schools. The sessions are themed around the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark and really get the children excited about rocks! Workshops include:
- Meet a geologist – what does a geologist do and what do they carry? What’s so special about a geological hammer?
- Rock, mineral and fossil samples from Torbay, the UK and beyond
- The incredible… the unbelievable… Toilet Roll of Time!
- Learning about the geology of Torbay and how it has changed over the last 400 million years
The project is led by Rich Blagden, a local teacher, geologist and co-founder of Taleblazers. He has been delivering workshops to local schools for a number of years, and his hands-on Geopark sessions are delivered with fun and enthusiasm! A journey through time that will leave your class enthused about the bedrock beneath their feet. We can also tailor the session content to reflect your curriculum if required.
Please get in touch for more information or if you would like to book us in!

The initial phase of this project was funded as part of Torbay’s Local Heritage Grant Scheme, made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
