The Programme:
At the ROC centre, we will be getting stuck into some well-earned holiday fun, including active games, storytelling, and arts and crafts activities. This is a great opportunity for young people to connect with others, make new friends, and try new things in a supportive environment! Upstairs we also have a foosball tables, badminton and air hockey, which is always a hit with the kids.
About HAF
Taleblazers are proud to be a recognised provider of the Torbay Council’s Healthy Holidays (HAF) scheme. These free school holiday programmes are funded by Torbay Council and are targeted primarily at children who are in receipt of free school meals. They are designed to help children and young people enjoy their school breaks in a safe environment. All activities are run by qualified staff and aim to have a positive effect on the young person’s health and well-being, as well as helping them to develop new skills.
Our Easter HAF project includes a healthy lunch, as well as some physical activity and storytelling as part of the fun!
All activities are aimed at children in Y3-6, but we will consider older and younger children, particularly if they are siblings of eligible children.
We delve into the therapeutic activity of hunting for sea glass along the shorelines of Torbay’s beaches. We discover how the journey of sea glass mirrors the challenges and growth in our own lives.
We spend a lot of time in the woods teaching young people about bushcraft and our relationships with the natural world. Alice explains why these activities are still relevant in the digital age.
Today was our spring gathering – the team dodged showers to clear some areas of Travellers Joy from the wood and enjoyed a story from Kev around the fire.
With guests Vik and Hannah of Creative Cullompton. In the podcast we talk about the amazing Golgotha at St Andrews Church, enthuse about the sheer volume of the local schoolchildren, discuss Creative Cullompton’s next projects and hint darkly at the time Kev nearly got off the train in the wrong county.
Last half term during our Arts Award sessions, we were working on creating stop-animation films, with a little bit of inspiration from Aardman studios, the creators of Wallace & Gromit!
To begin our module, we began making Thaumatropes, a toy from the Victorian period that, when spun, gave the illusion of movement. We also made some flipbooks to create our own ‘moving picture’ in the classroom.
Our students then watched a few stop-motion animations online as inspiration and were challenged to come up with their own ideas. What, or who would the main character be? What would the set design look like? What materials would they use?
Our students made prototype films to experiment with using the Stop Motion Studio app.
Then our students were tasked with creating their final set piece and characters. Our students made some really creative and fun final films – here is one called The Girl and the Whale!
During our lino-printing module our students experimented with using different tools and creating different patterns to print.
Today Alice did a photography lesson looking at light, aperture, and how we can completely alter the perception of the time of day by changing the focal length.
Our role in this project has been to deliver educational sessions to the two primary schools in Cullompton. Here we talk about the structure of the sessions and inspiration behind the educational content we delivered.
